German Shepherds are intelligent and active. They have a very big potential, and it is a must that an owner receives enough education on proper training. German Shepherd breeder clubs may provide lots of information on training. And, if the potential owner or breeder has not passed all necessary tests, he or she won't be allowed to keep a German Shepherd.
From early puppyhood your dog should take lessons with a planned and scheduled regime of the day. An 8 week old pup must learn where its dish and sleeping crate are. It is also necessary to give your pup a time orientation program as well. That means learning when to take food, to go for a walk or to take a bath. German Shepherd dogs love routine and predictability of life.

It is necessary to start teaching commands at this age. If the pup performs an undesired action, the command 'No!' should follow. The pup should also learn to take things from your hands in a gentle manner, without biting you. If it does, say 'No bite!' While grooming the pup must be able to stand still and offer no resistance.
After 3 months you should start leash training and obedience. The dog should always respond to commands and come immediately and obediently when called. It should learn to look directly into your eyes when you are talking. This is also a good time to begin socialization by teaching the dog to spend some time and play with other dogs, animals and people.
After 5 months German Shepherds learn to wait lying down for as long as the owner demands, even if the pup feels an urge to resist the order. Intelligence and agility training games are necessary during this period. Those can be a "Hide-and-Seek' game or ball games.
It is very important that your dog learns to distinguish between your relatives and regular guests. The dog should be able to greet guests and maintain a restrained behavior if there happen to be many people in the house.
At this stage a German Shepherd dog learns to play tricks, such as shaking hands, dancing and so forth. German Shepherds are supposed to be faithful and obedient, therefore, any sign of disregard to the owner's demands must be managed and precluded in proper time and in an appropriate manner.
