This breed is not difficult to keep in terms of grooming, as the natural look of these canines doesn’t require any special clipping. Occasional baths will do to keep their coat good looking. Pets of this breed are heavy shedders, especially in spring, when they shed off their winter coat; so they may be difficult to keep indoors at that time. A puppy coat is different from an adult coat; it needs more accurate grooming. Nail clipping, teeth brushing and ear cleaning should be done regularly.

Though these dogs were bred to be herding dogs, they were later used in many other activities. Thus, they also excel in Schutzhund, tracking, obedience, agility, fly ball, and ring sport. Nowadays, these dogs are used in all these activities remaining the best companion and pet dogs. Besides, the dog’s fine nose can sniff out drugs and intruders, and can alert handlers to the presence of underground mines in the right time to avoid detonation or gas leaks in pipes buried 15 feet underground.
