Originally developed as herding dogs, this breed has become the most versatile one nowadays. Only in some regions of East Germany, these dogs are still used for herding sheep. The looks of these dogs were dictated by the harsh climate in the area, predatory animals they had to fight, and other tasks they had to perform. There are several breed varieties that differ in their working abilities, body build, coat color and texture. High intelligence, reliability and ability to do specialized work unite all varieties of the breed and make them suited both for the show ring and for the role of a family pet.
