The present-day breed is very far from its ancestors in terms of temperament, working abilities and appearance. Some lines of the breed preserved in Germany are closer to the old standard; they tend to be larger with a broader head and darker coat. These animals are hardier and less prone to disorders typical of the modern breed. This line is praised for its working ability, but it poses a greater challenge in terms of training. Fanciers of this type try to raise it to the status of a separate breed. Many American bloodlines are smaller with less sloping to their hips.
